“Everything changes and nothing stand stills – Plato”

flying star chart 1
B by hipsterfengshui.com

The Flying Star School, a.k.a. “Xuan Kong Fei Xing Feng Shui”, is considered the most advanced school of classical feng shui.

I have found it very beneficial to consider the principles of the Flying Star School of feng shui in my practice.  Here are 5 key facts about flying star feng shui:

1. Time is of essence

In the principles of The Flying Star School, time and age of the property are factored into the assessment of the chi of an environment. Chi is not stagnant and it can change from negative to positive over time. This change impacts prosperity, health, and other life aspirations. One’s feng shui remedies and cures must be continually updated to factor the element of space and time. Time is split into 20 year cycles and each cycle represents a period, and 9 periods make up one grand cycle, representing 180 years in total.

2. It’s Traditional

The Flying Star School shares many of the key principles of traditional feng shui and considers the following:

Remember you can try different schools of feng shui as long as you pick schools that have consistent methodologies that do not contradict with each other. For example, it would not make sense to practice the BTB school of feng shui with the Compass school of feng shui because the BTB school does not utilize a compass but instead uses the position of an entrance to assess the feng shui of a location.

3. Numbers Matter

The lo shu square is a key tool in assessing the “flying stars” and determining the chi of an environment for a given time period (e.g. annually and monthly.) Each box in the grid signifies a number representing one of the feng shui stars. The numbers are constantly moving and thus “flying”.

Note that the lo shu below contains only a subset of factors. There are several other factors such as body organ that are not noted below.

4. Charts are created

A special “flying star” chart is created and utilized to measure an environment’s energies with numerological considerations. The chart contains nine boxes, each representing a sector of a structure.  The timespan in the chart can be annually, monthly, daily, and hourly. The chart is overlaid on top of a floor plan to determine lucky and unlucky sectors. The chart uses a formula to determine the movements of the stars, taking into account time, structural age, facing direction, and other factors. The squares usually contains three numbers, each signifying different stars with different levels of chi.

5. Don’t always take it personal

As mentioned in prior posts, every individual has four lucky and four unlucky directions. These directions are determined by the Kua Number Formula. One key thing to remember is that the principles of the Flying Star School take precedence and their concepts apply to every individual.

At some point in your life, you will have inauspicious flying stars that are residing in your “lucky direction.” When that happens, consider taking these three steps:

  1. Face, sleep, or sit temporarily in an alternative lucky direction
  2. Avoid creating any noise in that direction from remodeling, digging, and banging
  3. Place appropriate cures and remedies to help subdue the effects of the flying star infliction

All the different schools and approaches have the same end goal – that is to positively boost the energy of your space. To avoid being overwhelmed by what feng shui has to offer, I recommend tackling feng shui in small bits first. You don’t need to know how to calculate the flying stars yourself immediately, it takes  time to learn.

Not only do we constantly change, but so does our environment over time. Just as one should continually maintain their health regularly, one would continually adjust the feng shui of their environment.

Stayed tuned! I will share with you simple and fairly affordable tips and tricks to handle those unlucky flying stars of the next lunar new year in an upcoming post!

bed next to toilet wall
by hipsterfengshui.com

Question:

My bed is sharing the same wall as the toilet. How do I improve the feng shui when my bed is next to the toilet wall? I have no other option. Although the door to the bathroom does not lead to my bedroom, my bedroom has a very odd layout. The room has a slanted ceiling that slants down into a wall of windows (this would be the east wall and opposite of the bedroom door). Placing my bed in the corner of this wall would allow me a good position as far as being able to see the bedroom door, but not having the door be across from the bed. However, there would be windows both sides and that is the lowest part of the roof slant.

Ugh. You see, all three sides of the room are full of windows because the builder wanted to (understandably) catch the amazing views of the Rocky Mountains. There is one wall (the north wall) that is partially solid, but the bed would be right next to the closet door, and my head would be in an inauspicious direction (five ghosts with some six killings direction).

This leaves me with only one option… the west wall, which is shared with the shower & toilet.  The upshot to this placement is that it is in a very auspicious direction for me and the most auspicious for my partner, who is the breadwinner.  It is also at the highest point of the slanted ceiling.  There are no water or sewage pipes that run under the bedroom… or inside the wall that is shared with the bedroom.  However, the toilet is right behind my head, and there is a vent pipe leading from the toilet to the roof in this wall.

Any help is greatly appreciated, as we are in the end stages of finishing the home and will be moving into that room very soon.  Thanks.

Answer:

You definitely posed a challenging, yet a very common issue in feng shui. A bed sharing the wall of the toilet may lead to health problems.

Looks like none of the four walls in the bedroom are ideal for bed placement based on your description. The best option is to move the bed. Or is there another room in the house that you can use? If there is no other option, here are a few thoughts:

  • Place a thick headboard for your bed at the common wall between the bathroom and bedroom. The purpose is to subdue the rushing energy from the toilet.
  • Place a picture of a mountain above the headboard, which signals great support and the mountain also blocks the bad Qi (chi) from the bathroom.
  • The other option is to place some decorative rock or stone behind the head on the thick headboard (making sure that it is secure and doesn’t fall off), which serves the same purpose as the mountain portrait.
  • Place a small box with different types of crystals to represent the five elements behind the head (making sure the box is secure and would not fall off).
  • If possible, thicken the wall by adding material or decorative sheet rock to create an additional barrier and support between the toilet and your bed.
  • You can add a flat mirror behind your headboard reflecting the wall. The idea is to reflect the toilet and subdue the rushing energy.
  • Use night stands to balance energy.
  • If possible, use another toilet and always keep the toilet seat covered and bathroom door closed.
  • For the slanted ceilings, make sure you install bright lights in the house to boost the chi of the ceiling.
  • I also recommend boosting the health area of the bagua, which is in the east sector. You can create mini baguas throughout your home (i.e. boost the east of the living room, boost the east of the bedroom, etc).
  • Place remedies as noted in my post about toilet cures based on the bagua direction the toilet is in.

I have yet to meet anyone including any master or consultant who has achieved 100% perfect feng shui in a given space, especially the bedroom. It’s a really common issue. My motto is to do the best with what you have and follow your intuition. Also, focus on creating positive energy. This includes creating positive energy with your thoughts. Then place additional feng shui remedies throughout your property to maximize the feng shui of your overall space. Remember feng shui represents 1/3 of one’s luck. There are also other factors that impact one’s luck, the luck that we create for ourselves and the luck that we are born with.

These are just a few suggestions and hope you find them helpful. Take care and wishing you all the best.

Almost every parent I know wants the best for their child. But despite how hard the parents try, sometimes their kids suffer from health issues, lack of concentration in school, and other issues. I have seen feng shui benefits not only adults, but also children. I will show you how to calculate the Kua number and lucky directions for children born the year 2000 and later.

As discussed in a prior post, one major principle of Feng Shui is that each individual has lucky and unlucky directions and locations. Certain directions energize one person but not another. As with adults, children have individual lucky and unlucky directions that are determined using a calculation called the Pa Kua Lo Shu Formula or Kua Number Formula.

The steps for calculating your child’s kua number and lucky directions are similar to those for adults’, with the exception to one minor difference if your child is born in or after the year 2000 as noted in Step 2 below. Note: For children whose birth year is before 2000, refer to this earlier post: Feng Shui Basics – Part II: 4 Easy Steps to Calculate Your Kua Number and Lucky Directions or video.

Here are 4 Steps to Calculate Your Child’s Kua Number and Lucky Directions for individuals with birth years in or after the year 2000:

1. Convert Your Child’s Birth Year

First, take your child’s birth year and convert it to the lunar year using this conversion calculator. If you already know you child’s lunar birth year, you can skip this step.

2. Calculate Your Child’s Kua or “Gua” number

With your child’s Kua number, you can personalize their specific feng shui needs. Below is the formula and example calculation for birth years in or after the year 2000:

Formula Example
a. Take your child’s lunar birth year. a. 2014
b. Add the last two digits of the lunar birth year from Step a to get to a single digit number. b. 1+4 = 5
c.  If the number from Step b is greater than 9, add the individual digits to get to a single digit. c. Not Applicable as 5 is less than 9
d. For female: Add 6 (as opposed to 5 for those born before the year 2000) to the number calculated in Step c. If the number is greater than 9, add the individual digits to get to a single digit. d. 5+6 = 11; 1+1 = 2
d. For male: Reduce the number calculated in Step c above from 9 (as opposed to 10 for those born before the year 2000). d. 9-5 = 4

3. Determine Your Child’s Lucky Direction Group

According to the traditional principles of Feng Shui, each individual is either a East person or a West person. Knowing this, combined with your child’s Kua number, allows you to determine his or her four lucky directions to spend time in and unlucky directions to avoid.

Using the Kua number calculated in Step 2 above, you can easily determine whether your child is an east or west person based on the chart below.

Kua # Lucky Group
1, 3, 4, 9 East
2, 5, 6, 7, 8 West

4. Determine Your Child’s Lucky Directions

Below is a summary table of the best directions and worst directions for each Kua number. You can refer to this table to determine which direction your child should sit and face and boost their luck!

Auspicious Inauspicious
Kua Luckiest Direction Health Direction Romance Direction  Personal Growth Obstacles Direction Five Ghosts Direction Six Killings Direction Total Loss Direction
1 SE E S N W NE NW SW
2 NE W NW SW E SE S N
3 S N SE E SW NW NE W
4 N S E SE NW SW W NE
5 NE (Male)SW (Female) W (Male)NW (Female) NW (Male)W (Female) SW (Male)NE (Female) E (Male)S (Female) SE (Male)N (Female) S (Male)E (Female) N (Male)SE (Male)
6 W NE SW NW SE E N S
7 NW SW NE W N S SE E
8 SW NW W NE S N E SE
9 E SE N S NE W SW NW

If you are wondering what some of these terms mean e.g. what six killings mean, here is a quick description of each:

Lucky Directions

  • Luckiest: represents success, prosperity, and advancement.
  • Health: signifies great mind, body, strength and overall health
  • Romance: means great personal and working relationships
  • Personal Growth: represents stability and development

Unlucky Directions

  • Obstacles: represents failure, mishaps, and obstacles with people and day to day life.
  • Five Ghosts: brings negativity including disagreements, gossips and rumors, misunderstandings, etc.
  • Six Killings: causes negativity in personal, school and work relationships, including legal issues such as accidents.
  • Total Loss: this is the worst location which brings sickness, personal and business failures.

Final Thoughts

While most of my readers are adults, many are looking to improving the feng shui for their entire family. Whether your child is having issues concentrating in school, or constantly getting sick, it may be worth looking into your child’s environment.

By knowing your child’s lucky and lucky directions, as well the bagua of your space, you can help maximize the chi of your child’s environment. Having trouble finding your or your child’s kua number? Leave me a comment below.
